Harvest dust is in the air and the fall routines have returned, which also means the return of fall shows and seminars. There are many opportunities to gather in the next few months to meet with fellow producers and industry peeps, all the while refreshing our minds with the latest hog sector trends. Alberta Livestock Expo October 5th & 6th, Red Deer Swine Technology Workshop October 19th, Saskatchewan Pork Industry Symposium November 15th & 16th and Prairie Livestock Expo December 14th. Check out Pork Chops for details on each event.
Thinking even further ahead, registration for Banff Pork Seminar will open by the time this issue is released. Check out banffpork.ca for all details.
All of us in the hog sector were pleased with the recent announcement of the Federal Government investing 45.3 million to help prevent and prepare for a potential outbreak of African Swine Fever in Canada. As we all know it would be devastating to the entire hog industry. The funding announcement includes $23.4 million to support the sector’s already robust prevention and mitigation efforts, $19.8 million to support of the efforts of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and $2.1 million to enhance the work of Canada Border Services Agency on border control activities.
An extra thanks to Harry for getting the details of when the Queen visited Milltown Colony in 1970.
I am excited to share I will once again be including a submission from Pastor Neil Stern, even though he has transferred to a different church he has agreed to keep providing our readers with a portion of a recent sermon.
There is still time to submit photos for the 2023 Prairie Hog Country Calendar. While the photo contest is complete, I still need more photos for the Calendar, please send by October 31st.
Please remember to send only pictures that are a positive reflection of our industry.
