Following Prime Minster Justin Trudeaus’ cabinet shuffle Lawrence Macaulay once again takes over the role of Minister of Agriculture & Agri-Food. This is a positon he has previously held with PM Trudeau starting back in 2015. •
CAFTA Welcomes New Executive Director
Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA) Members welcomed their new executive director, Michael Harvey. Michael Harvey is an experienced public affairs executive who has specialized in international business, law and diplomacy. His career has included roles with a senior multinational mining company, the Privy Council Office and Global Affairs Canada. “I am honoured to have been chosen as CAFTA’s Executive Director and will work to increase awareness of the importance and value of agri-food trade and international markets to Canadian agri-food exporters and the Canadian economy” stated Harvey.
Michael began his new role back on July 24, 2023. As the Executive Director, Michael will lead CAFTA’s advocacy strategy and communications and continue to advance the organization’s priorities. “The CAFTA Board is excited to welcome Michael Harvey as our new Executive Director. Michael’s experience in diplomacy, policy and government relations will help advance CAFTA’s priorities in the years ahead” stated CAFTA President Dan Darling. •

Masterfeeds awards scholarships to students with a passion for agriculture
Viscount, SK and Brantford, ON students awarded the Masterfeeds Future Masterfeeder Scholarship for 2023
Following a competitive application process, Kira Wigness of Viscount, SK and Reegan Charlton of Brantford, ON were both awarded the Masterfeeds Future Masterfeeder Scholarship. Both recipients will be attending the University of Saskatchewan, where Kira will be studying Agriculture and BioResources and Reegan will be pursuing a degree in Animal Science.
“Masterfeeds is dedicated to supporting the next generation of agriculture, and we are proud to offer this annual scholarship,” said Paul Groenewegen, director of innovation and nutrition at Masterfeeds. “We award this scholarship to individuals who show a desire to shape the future of agriculture, and Kira and Reegan have certainly demonstrated that.”
Masterfeeds awards the Future Masterfeeder Scholarship yearly to individuals pursuing a post-secondary education in agriculture within Canada, who can demonstrate their passion for agriculture and what they hope to achieve for the future of food production or other ag-related pursuits. •

Combine your passion for agriculture and storytelling with the new Agriculture Communications certificate.
The first of its kind offered in Canada, this one year program prepares you for a meaningful career supporting the agriculture and agri-food industry in communications and marketing.
Delivered asynchronously online, you’ll have the flexibility of completing the program around your schedule, allowing you to develop new skills while maintaining your current job or running your own business.
Completed over the course of ten months, you will learn the foundations of professional writing, marketing, and multi-media production, including entry-level videography, photography and audio production. You will also learn how to develop public relations and crisis communications campaigns and strategies that will help them to influence positive change using effective communications and dynamic storytelling.
After completing the online courses, you’ll be required to put your new skills and knowledge to the test with a 14-week paid field placement within the industry or with your current employer.
