Greetings to one and all. As I have said many times, the older we get, the faster time seems to go by. Here we are on the fourth of six editions in 2022. But as mentioned in the previous issue, it is wonderful to be returning to more and more in person events.
As you saw on the cover, I was able to help out as a volunteer with the pork committee team at Calgary Stampede. What a great day, being able to answer many, many questions. An amazing occasion to help share our wonderful world of pigs with city slickers. See page 50 for more photos.
Looking ahead to fall will have opportunities to connect for both education and networking. Starting with Alberta Livestock Expo in Lethbridge October 6 & 7, followed by Red Deer Swine Technology Workshop in Red Deer October 19th, then Saskatchewan Pork Industry Livestock Symposium November 16 & 17 in Saskatoon concluded by Prairie Livestock Expo in Winnipeg December 14. Details on all of these events can be found on page 54 under Pork Chops.
Looking back, Alberta Pork Congress in June was a success, under the theme ‘Welcome Back,’ attendees and exhibitors very much enjoyed being together again. While we didn’t have the annual awards banquets, we were treated to the sounds of an amazing local artist, Alecia Aichelle. The weather modified the original plans of an outside BBQ, however she sounded great inside and the welcome back BBQ supper was yummy.
For the past couple years, I have included a message from my own pastor, I have received many positive responses to this. Some even saying they found the brief as a bit of inspiration in these troubling times. I am sorry to say at this time I do not believe I will be including a pastor message moving forward as Pastor Neil Stern has transferred from my home church.
Included in this edition are the full survey results. Thanks once again to all those who took the time to answer back and give us positive encouragement and some good story suggestions too. I once again was humbled by the results and so appreciate the reassurance that all you readers like, enjoy and in most cases prefer our format and style. Since 1996 it has been a privilege to bring you the latest hog news and information and I look forward for years to come. Once again, I was touched to see how long many have been reading Prairie Hog Country with 60 per cent at eleven years or more and 30 per cent at more than twenty years. Ninety-one per cent of advertisements in Prairie Hog Country do influence purchasing decisions. Complete results are in the centre section of this issue.
See page 45 for the photo contest winners. Let me remind you that there is still time to send in photos for consideration for the 2023 Prairie Hog Country Calendar.
