It is hard to believe here we are in the fourth of six editions in 2021. The days, weeks and months are zooming by. Sorry no pun intended. With restrictions loosening, yes some provinces more then others, it is so wonderful to see more unmasked faces again. It looks as though we will be able to gather again in person this fall. I know myself, along with many others in the pig sector are so looking forward to that day, Alberta Livestock Expo in Lethbridge seems to be the first trade show where we can gather. Followed by the Red Deer Swine Technology workshop a few weeks later. Then looking into November, Saskatchewan Pork Industry Symposium and of course Brandon Hog & Livestock Expo in December* (if not cancelled). Rounded out by the return of in person Banff Pork Seminar in January. Prairie Hog Country will keep you updated on all the latest events. Of course all events are subject to the latest COVID provincial restrictions.
Thanks David for meeting and doing a story with a small lot producer in the Fraser Valley in BC. While the majority of readers and followers of Prairie Hog Country are larger producers, I always like to check in on the smaller ones. As we all know, especially in BC, they are more common.
Also included in this issue an update on Vertical Integration. A US court appeal about reducing processing capacity. Collaborating a key to fight against ASF. Swine outlook cautiously optimistic. Heat disinfection revolutionizes transport biosecurity. Higher hog prices. Maple Leafs purchase of hog farms in Saskatchewan. Reminding city slickers where their food comes from. Wild weather a mixed blessing and much much more.
The complete survey results can be located in the centre spread of this issue. Thanks to all who took time to fill out and return. And even bigger thank you for still verifying Prairie Hog Country is your favourite and preferred hog magazine. I was so touched that 38 percent have been reading Prairie Hog Country for over 20 years. Seventy – seven percent keep Prairie Hog Country for more then two months, and 65 percent have four or more read each issue. Ninety-eight percent say advertisements do influence their purchasing decisions, so again huge thanks to all the advertisers and their financial support. Without you there would be no magazine. As 95 percent feel in person meetings, events, trade shows etc. are vital Prairie Hog Country will continue to see you at them in person.
Although the photo contest is complete, see winners on page 38 we still need more photos for consideration for the 2022 Prairie Hog Country Calendar, so send them in today. For those that plan ahead the release dates for 2022 are on page 41.
