Hypor BBQ Battle 2018

It was a beautiful day for a BBQ, about 23C with the occasional gust of wind; it felt hotter though.

About 150 people from across Alberta and Montana chowed down on 300 racks of ribs from Maple Leaf Pork. Nine animal nutrition companies competed for the TTT Stock Co.-Hypor BBQ Battle trophy with their secret family recipes, smokers and grills.

The three judges (Ralph and Jim from Maple Leaf) and Carl from Hypor – did not have an easy job this time around as it seemed like everyone really brought their “A” games this year. Points were awarded in various catergories; flavour, texture, creativity/difficulty, tenderness, appearance and overall. The judges were “blinded” so they didn’t know whose ribs they were evaluating.

In the end, Standard Nutrition / IVS came out on top with Western Ag and Connect OnFarm taking 2nd and 3rd place respectively. All the ribs were excellent but the crowd favourite seemed to be the beans… a secret recipe direct from Kingsbury Colony in Montana. •

Alberta Pork in Public Eye

Alberta Pork has been busy this last few months publicly promoting Alberta Pork at both Porkapalooza and the Calgary Stampede.

First was the 5th Annual Porkapalooza BBQ Festival. A chance for BBQ teams from all over the US and Canada to compete for title and trophy. This year 50 teams competed in four catergories Pork Ribs, Chicken, Pork Butt and Beef Brisket. Watching the teams prepare is serious business.

In addition many displays, live music, food stage displays, kid zone and vendors on hand to make it fun for whole family. All the while being a fundraiser for a few a local charities.

Kudos also to entire volunteer team at the Calgary Stampede, once again a large crowd would gather every day to watch the pigs. Thousand walk through the agriculture exhibits during the 10 day show, during the Stampede much focus is on Agriculture and how important it is to the local industry and economy. It is a great learning opportunity for the general public to see and understand pig production. Alberta Pork had some very informative displays on hand, of course the highlight for most are the live pigs themselves.

Thanks to Lisa Doyle for passing along some pictures showing just how hard it must be to be full time celebrities, as all the pigs were content taking naps. •

Lee’s Retirement Party

A large group gathered on June 18th to celebrate Lee Whittington, and a career that has been dedicated to the industry.

Twenty six of those years at the Prairie Swine Centre. Friends, family, producers and industry colleagues got together to pay tribute to a guy who has given so much time and dedication to the swine sector.

What is more fitting then a whole hog BBQ dinner for the festivities. The food was divine and the company even better.

Rick Bergmann (CPC Chair) attended and presented Lee with an award for his contribution to the Canadian pork industry.

Good luck Lee where ever your path leads we at Prairie Hog Country wish you all the best in your retirement and thank you for always being so approachable with our many questions over the years. •

Congratulations Stu

Stuart Lumb, as most of you know under his pen name for Prairie Hog Country, Norman Crabtree, won Silver. On a recent trip to Odense Denmark he competed in a 3K swim and 120K bike event. He managed to get a silver medal. Congrats Stu, seen with his Yorkshire flag. •
